Rooftop Forest (Yukio Minobe 美濃部 幸郎, 2005)

“Rooftop Forest” has investigated a form and a material organisation with which a performative inner-climate can be emerged through their interactions with the natural energies. While the porous structure both in the vertical and horizontal direction provides sufficient inlets and outlets for the air flows, the mountain-like form allows itself to enhance its natural ventilation performances with the stack effect driven by the differentiation in heights. Furthermore, materials on the skin from naturals such as a green moss to artefacts like glasses have been arranged so that they can generate an appropriate temperature field, which is another driver for the air movements,  as well as store and generate heats with the sun.
An adaptive differentiation in form and material organisation can yield a specific inner-climate with utilising the site-specific environmental conditions for a survival in a self-sufficient way. Like a forest.
